It’s a great chance to enjoy calling in at Spanish and Portuguese ports – where the cafes and restaurants have that continental holiday feel about them. Something else that is very special about this voyage is to arrive in Lisbon from the sea. You will sail around the Cabo da Roca – this cape topped by a lighthouse is the westernmost point in Europe and is marked by an inscription by poet Luis de Camões: "Here, land ends and the sea begins." It is one of Portugal's most emblematic sites; a country always looking out to sea.
Lisbon itself is spread across steep hillsides that overlook the Rio Tejo. The city offers many delights - Gothic cathedrals, majestic monasteries and quaint museums are all part of the colourful cityscape, though many people think that the real discoveries lie in wandering the narrow lanes of Lisbon’s lovely backstreets. Lisbon is the oldest city in Western Europe, predating other modern European capitals such as London, Paris and Rome by hundreds of years. And to sail in on a tall ship is one of the very best ways to arrive there – you won’t feel like an ordinary tourist.
