Dean reunites cycling team for new charity challenge
Former rugby international and Tigers’ player Dean Richards and a team of fund-raisers are gearing up to cycle 300 miles to help a group of young disabled people from Leicestershire take part in a tall ship sailing adventure.
Dean and his team from the Hinckley area call themselves the Gravity Fund-raisers and are taking on a mountain bike ride in France to try to raise £50,000 for the Jubilee Sailing Trust.
"We just want to help give young people the opportunity to have this experience," explains Dean, "We feel inspired by the trust’s work and, although the cycle ride will be a challenge, we will be aiming to enjoy the experience while raising as much money as possible."
The team of 20 riders and fund-raisers want to raise enough money to send 20 young, disabled people from Leicestershire on a tall ship voyage in August 2011.
They have already raised around £300,000 for various charities with a series of similar biking challenges since their first sponsored ride to Skegness in June 2000.
This cycle challenge for the JST, which will take place in June next year, will see them cycle from Mont Ventoux and, 300 miles later, scale the last climb of the 2010 Tour de France 14th stage at Ax Bonascre near the village of Ax Les Thermes.
The bike ride is just one part of the fund-raising efforts. Events throughout the coming months have been planned to support sponsorship. The team launched their challenge at a dinner event and were delighted to raise £4,319.

This is my first marathon, 2 months after I celebrate my 50th birthday! I began running 3.5 years ago at the beginners group of our local running club 'Stowmarket Striders' with the intention of just getting a little fitter BUT running is addictive! I have now completed several half marathons. I find running to be stress relieving and, yes, I have improved my fitness.

Having been on numerous adventures through the Jubilee Sailing Trust on the Lord Nelson and Tenacious I have decided to raise funds by doing a skydive with the Red Devils. I'm only 80 years young and I am looking forward to this new adventure and hope you will sponsor my endeavours for such a worthy cause.
So please dig deep and donate now.

On the 1st July we set out to cycle from Land's End to John O' Groats in aid of the Jubileee Sailing Trust.
JB cycled with me, and Dave Dickson was the Support Team. We arrived at John O' Groats on a wet and windy day on 12th July, one day earlier than planned, covering 940 miles with an average of over 82 miles per day. Not too bad for a Senior Citizen and an overweight 59-year old!
A huge thank you to John for keeping me company and to Dave for his support.
It's still not too late to sponsor me, the page will stay open until October. We paid our own expenses, so all sponsor money will go to the JST.

I sailed across the Atlantic with 4 friends (well actually one friend and three people I have just met). This is something of a personal challenge for me, as although I have sailed on the west coast and to France I have rarely lost sight of land! This time, its 2,890 miles of sea between Lanzarote and Antigua. We are going on a 43 ft catamaran and it should take between 18 days and 3 weeks. Whilst scurvy is unlikely, I am a bit worried about my caffeine levels and there is a nasty rumour that alcohol is to be either severely rationed or completely unavailable.
I am talking up the severity of the challenge and privations as I am hoping to raise some money for a very worthwhile charity, the Jubilee Sailing Trust.
If you look at the attached link you will be able to find out more, and will see from the testimonials that such trips can have a profound effect on people’s lives. I hope that you will forgive the request, and hope too that you will feel able to sponsor our endeavour. Thanks You.
