16/01/2010 - Tenacious

Dated: 16/01/2010

After an afternoon of rough winds and rain the Captain decided to motor on.

When evening came and the winds were reaching up to force ten, a few voyage members decided to make things fun as sailing was not occurring, and turned Tenacious into a pirate ship. The captain would not allow swinging from the ropes at such great wind so they settled for pirate scrabble in the lower mess of the ship. This new version involves such words as arrrrrrrrgh and players must cover one eye with an eyepatch. All queries are settled with a fun sword fight.

Due to the head on waves and bumpy ride we arrived at the bridge a little later than desired. As most people were lying comfortably in bed,at about 4 am, we motored under the Rion-Andirrion bridge. As the voyage crew looked up and held their breaths, the watch took Tenacious under with 3 metres to spare above the main mast. What looked very close to most was really a comfortable margin.

Another day of strong headwinds and rain meant the ship had to continue motoring. At mid-morning, some sails were put up but then brought down rather quickly as they did not seem to make much of a difference. After the favourite part for most voyagers happened, known as happy hour, the ship was sparkling clean but that did not last due to rock buns being sprinkled all over the deck and lower mess.

After another lovely meal cooked for the entire crew by Graham, the ship motored forward through some unpredictable winds in an attempt to near the Corinth Canal. As we neared the canal, the Captain knew there was not sufficient daylight to try to get to the other side. Along with the lack of daylight, the winds were quite a problem and were not co-operating. The Captain decided to head inshore and set anchor. Once the anchor was dropped initially, unfortunately, the ship did not hold. The anchor was brought up and we motored to the other side of the bay. Once on the other side, two anchors were dropped into a more muddy sea bed, which is better for anchoring. Once anchored, most were waiting for the bar to open that extra hour early ( and it was a loooong wait-MP).

After a tasty dinner, the shop opened and most members stocked up on souvenirs for themselves and family members or friends or significant others. Once the shop closed the pirates came out again and another round of pirate scrabble occurred. Due to so many pirates wanting to partake, teams were created. The Pirate King is hoping this will carry on and pirate scrabble will now occur on every Tenacious and Lord Nelson voyage. The pirates were tired and went to bed while others stayed up a bit longer to make sure no Greek pirates came aboard. To everyone's relief, no pirates made it aboard.
