16/10/2009 - Lord Nelson

Dated: 16/10/2009

We left Dieppe early this morning and used our engine to travel back across the channel because of a unhelpful wind. We over took our rivals in the Stavros S Niarchos and despite talk of turning a fire extinguisher into a cannon and flying a jolly roger we passed without incident. The rest of the day was uneventful until the ship’s South African and the braver member of the Scottish contingent spotted Beachy Head from the top of the main mast which merited calls of “land ho” and the usual pirate noises. For the rest of the day we gradually got closer to Britain before just as the sun went down we hoisted the sails and drifted slowly along the coast towards The Solent.
