Tenacious continues to live up to her name, sailing (motor- sailing) on in heavy winds, with gusts to 45 kn, rolling seas washing over our decks, and the ship has been rocking and rolling as well, with one or two rolls to 40 degrees. Weather has been broken clouds with scattered showers but good visibility. After losing one staysail, several bruises and contusions, and multiple broken plates (Poor Joe!), we are now safe in port in Gijon, Spain. Spirits are good and enthusiasm remains high as we await a window of better weather. Barry, AS.
We arrived at Gijon on the 5th day and stayed along side till 7th day. It was a welcome break from the rolling around of the previous days. I celebrated my birthday at several bars in town and Graham baked me a birthday cake which we all enjoyed at smoko. Unfortunately we have lost a voyage crew member due to the stormy seas. Tony injured himself (2 broken ribs) and was taken to hospital at Gijon. We all wish him well! We’re back on the seas now with the square sails set and no engines running for the first time this voyage. Cadiz is our next port of call, hoping to arrive there this Friday. J
