18/02/2009 - Tenacious

Dated: 18/02/2009

We woke this morning after nearly a whole night under engine to find that the wind was just not there! The sails were set early but again the wind was just not in our favour and we limped along slowly all morning. We took part in our first happy hour after filling up on Graham's tasty snacks!

We had lunch early as our watch started at 12.30. As we were eating suddenly water started pouring in all the windows nearly drenching us! The guys upstairs hadn't quite finished happy hour and started scrubbing the decks and they forgot to tell us to close all the windows! (an untimely shower).

As our watch started the wind increased and our work began. We braced the sails 3 times in total, no easy feat! Although the wind was there it was quite changeable. We set 3 more sails then we picked up nicely. We reached a top speed of 8.5 knots. The swell grew as did the wind and the ship started to heel quite a lot. The end of our watch came just as we were arriving in El Hierro and it was then all hands on deck to take in the sails and go alongside. Ned threw out the brest line and got it straight on the anchor point, a tremendous feat for which he got a huge round of applause. We finished up mooring just in time for tea.
