21/07/2009 - Tenacious
Dated: 21/07/2009
Night watches were kept busy; a cargo ship had anchored within our cable
range. As we were all well versed in our watches we were able to arouse the
deck officer on watch so safety of the ship was maintained and the rest of
the crew were able to have a peaceful nights sleep.
After all that excitement of the previous night the new day promised a trip
to the shore.
We were not able to go alongside so we had to go across in the DOTI boats.
This involved getting very, very wet!
It did mean however that we were able
to enjoy a day in the "mild climate" of Alderney.
We all had a very nice day on the Island, not that we saw much as we spent
a fair proportion of it keeping dry.
Those who braved the elements, either by foot, bike or minibus, were able
to explore the many fortresses of Alderney. Being only 3.5 miles long, most
were able to see the whole island.
A bit of exploration also discovered the patches of brambles covering the
cliffs. Fulfilling his role as the insane Irishman, Dan proceeded to strip
off and wade into the freezing sea for a swim!
The guys onboard ship were then kind enough to come and pick us up in time
for our dinner.
Having enjoyed our dinner we all gathered together in the lower mess for a
little sing song with Rebecca on the flute and Dan and Kevin on the guitar
and Gerald breaking out into song.
