23/09/2008 - Tenacious
Dated: 23/09/2008
Yesterday, we had a very interesting day. To start, it was a very windy day and we had been sailing the entire night. By morning, we were in between Jersey and Guensey and we had to go back the other direction. After breakfast, we were given instructions on how to tack the ship to turn against the wind and then back the other direction. This included a lot of work effort and team work. The people who went aloft to tie the gaskets felt the force of the wind even more. Every time they climbed up further, they were able to feel the wind getting stronger and stronger by the altitude.
For the people below on the deck, the job wasn't quite easy either. The movement of the sea made the job a little harder as well. This job was quite challenging but everything came out right.
The captain seems to be very pleased.
Later, it was time for Happy Hour. This time it was our turn for the Port Watch to clean the deck. Everyone was given a task and helped each other out as well. Stephane was given the task of handling the hose. At first when the water was turned on, because the hose was a little twisted, it went out of control and Stephane got all wet. But later he took revenge by wetting everyone else. It was quite fun I must say.
We later had lunch and had the rest of the day to ourselves until dinner time. After dinner, some people stayed in the lower mess chatting, drinking and playing some games. It was a nice time to socialise. Some people from our group, also had to do Anchor Watch at night time. However, before getting on watch, Laura and Stephane were given the chance to go aloft and do some sailing work. This was quite exciting for them. Robert also had a very interesting watch that night. He was able to spot some fishes in the water that were attracted to the light of the ship. There were a variety of fishes that were quite amusing to watch.
It was a very good day. Laura and Robert would like to go aloft whenever they can. They seem to enjoy being up there a lot.
