26/02/2009 - Tenacious

Dated: 26/02/2009

During our watch last night we had beautiful starry night with no wind and calm seas. The ship was very quiet as everyone seemed to have taken the opportunity of an early night. Ali the bosun showed us the ins and outs of Astro Navigation while Alan and Martin gained helming miles. The wind died down to nothing during the night ensuring everyone had a peaceful sleep. After a scrumptious breakfast we handed the sails and continued on motor towards Tenerife. Jon's birthday was celebrated with a big birthday cake - another masterpiece by Graham. Not a crumb left.

We are again on watch, the sea is calm and flat with everyone having a nice time reading and relaxing on deck. We are cruising along at seven knots today, a school of dolphins swung by to say hi and Jorgen taught us the sailor's most useful knot, the bowline knot. We are sailing between the islands of La Gomera and Tenerife. There is a slight mist but visibility is still good. Great excitement at the end of the watch - we saw two minke whales cruising along on the port side!
