The day started with another hearty breakfast of porridge, bacon, sausages and all the trimmings. Before leaving Cherbourg at ten o’clock, there were three very successful assisted climbs, offering a wonderful view of the town. No sailing was possible due to the wind, but there was a nice swell to keep everyone on their toes.
After casting off we had my favourite part of the day. During smoko Gerry the chef brought out the biggest birthday cake that I have ever had and we all tucked in. Happy hour came, went and was enjoyed by all. At half past eight in the evening the anchor was dropped. Everyone joined together for a game of trivial persuit! Although the team members didn’t answer their own questions, everyone had fun. At half 9 plenty of us decided to call it a day and be rocked to sleep, whilst some sat in the upper mess eating biscuits. Everyone made sure watch leader Giles enjoyed his birthday with a pint or two.
