After morning duties most people took the opportunity to go ashore and see Horta, walking to the nearby beach and climbing the hill to see the caldera. Bamboo replaced hedges to form windbreaks around terraced fields.
Arum lilies, nasturtiums and small Hydrangeas were flowering. Heathers and Tamarisk were also in abundance. Some of the voyage crew took taxis for a three hour ride around the island, while others walked nearer to Horta.
During the afternoon we got a peek at Pico's peek but the rest was shrouded in cloud.
