I think we are at about 26 deg at the moment, not to rub it in to toooooo many snow lovers in the islands of Britain. Our arrival was greated by many onlookers and to many of us, this was our time to feel like movies stars for just 10 minutes (I know it was the ship, but we can all pretend)!!!! I however, predicted the time of arrival and won the sweepstake, to which I may add I am yet to recieve..note to self: find Ian and collect winings!!!

The most spectacular sunrise of the voyage so far greeted us on the start of day 8 as we motored towards the Canaries with Lanzarote in sight fine on the starboard bow.

The wind direction south. Reluctantly we took down the sails and reverted to using the engine. Together with the routine Happy Hour of cleaning partly spent in friendly sport trying to outwit our Medical Purser, we enjoyed Captain Barbara's interesting explanation of the basis of celestial navigation. We discovered that using a sextant to bring the sun or other celestial body to the horizon is a skill. Subsequently, on watch some of us had an opportunity to put what we had learned into practice.

A large bus lit up the quay on the 18th at 20.00, filled with tired yet enthusiastic, voyage crew for TNS 295, Caiscais to Las Palmas. However we were beginning this voyage from Leixoes and will soon be bypassing Caiscais.

Curious as to why the engines started last night? The mate has informed me that it was due to the ship's anchor dragging along the seabed due to the 40-50 mile per hour winds overnight.

The happy spirit among all the crew has continued unabated, unlike the wind and waves, which is just as well, since the combined forces of wind and tide got together to smack us in the teeth as soon as we had cleared the Isle of Wight.
