Girlguiding voyages with Jubilee Sailing Trust now even more accessible

Dated: 31/03/2010

Girlguiding UK celebrate their Centenary on board two unique tall ships

Girlguiding UK have announced special discounted prices on board the first three voyages of their tall ship adventure centenary programme now, meaning even more guiding members between the ages of 14 and 30 can enjoy the adventure of a lifetime onboard one of only two tall ships in the world designed and built to enable able bodied and disabled people to sail alongside one another as equals.

Girlguiding UK have chartered the Jubilee Sailing Trust’s tall ship, Lord Nelson, for 100 days as part of their year long calendar of Centenary celebrations. The 100 day trip has been split into 10 9-11 day long voyages which will take the ship right around the UK, starting and ending in Glasgow.

The first group of guides will set sail on Monday 7th June arriving in Oban on Tuesday 15thJune. Having spent 10 days as fully fledged crew members the girls will be old hands at keeping watch, taking the helm, helping in the galley, keeping the ship spotless and even climbing the rigging – with a chance of reaching the button (110ft from deck level).

During the evening of the 15th the ship will welcome younger members of guiding association as Rainbows and Brownies come on board for a sleepover with a difference, before a new group of 14 year old+ Senior Section guiding members arrive to take over as voyage crew.

The ship will be visiting the ports of Portsmouth, Liverpool, Aberdeen, Newcastle, Boston, Portsmouth, Chatham, Falmouth, Milford Haven, London and Whitehaven before arriving back in Glasgow on Friday 17th September. During each stopover Rainbows and Brownies from the area will be invited on board to get a chance to see the ship that their older counterparts have been living and working in.

This is a fantastic adventure for all guiding members, who are strongly encouraged to book now to avoid disappointment. Girlguiding and the Jubilee Sailing Trust are offering help and advice on fundraising to participants in order to enable them to reach the cost of the voyages. From this they’ll gain valuable experience of raising money for charity, while the experience on board will also count as the residential part of any Queen’s Guide Award or Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award.
