Hampshire Netball Players Scale New Heights for Charity

Dated: 18/11/2008

The Slug and Lettuce Netball Players

Hampshire based netball club the ‘Slug and Lettuce’ are to do their bit for local charity, the Jubilee Sailing Trust  (JST) when a number of the girls take on the challenge of climbing the 125ft mast of a tall ship on Sunday 10th May 2009 at Southampton Docks.

The Winchester based Slug and Lettuce Club, takes its name from their sponsors, the Slug and Lettuce bar in the city. Made up of players from all over Hampshire, they have two teams that play in the Basingstoke Netball League, The Shots who have just secured promotion after a very successful Winter Season and The Chasers who are looking to gain promotion this season.

The girls will be climbing the mast of Tenacious, one of two tall ships owned and operated by the JST. Both Tenacious and her sister ship, Lord Nelson are the only ships of their type in the world that have been designed and built to enable crews of all physical ability to sail side by side as equals.

The Shots and The Chasers, who train at Worthy Down, not only have a very active social calendar but regularly undertake charity fundraising activities such as the Cancer Research ‘Race for Life’ which took place earlier this year.

The club was introduced to the Jubilee Sailing Trust to by two of its members, Abbie Newens and Hannah Baker. Hannah who has previously sailed aboard Lord Nelson and Abbie both agree, “Once you witness the life changing work of the JST you’re really inspired to get involved.”

Abbie went on to say, “This is hopefully just the start of a great relationship between the netball club and the JST. All the girls are keen to support this wonderful local charity and raise as much money as possible whilst enjoying a great day out.”

She added, “Not all the girls are confident with heights and will need lots of support from the other players as they climb the 125ft to the mast head! This will be team building at its best!”
