Dated: 29/04/2009

Lord Nelson battles through some strong winds

The Jubilee Sailing Trust (JST) is delighted to announce that on Sunday 17th May, their magnificent tall ship Lord Nelson will be moored alongside the Lloyds TSB Amphitheatre in Bristol City Centre, allowing members of the public aboard to explore this unique vessel.

Owned and operated by the Southampton based JST, the 55 metre, 370 tonne Lord Nelson and her sister ship Tenacious, are the only two tall ships in the world that have been purpose designed and built to enable people of all physical abilities to sail the oceans side by side as equals.

Members of the public are invited to tour the ship from 10am -12 noon and then from 2pm - 4pm, where they will be able to get ‘hands on’ aboard a working tall ship. These tours will be a real treat for those interested in the historic art of tall ship sailing.

Since her maiden voyage in 1986, Lord Nelson has taken almost 24,000 people on voyages. Nearly 9,305 of these people have had a physical disability and of these 3,611 were wheelchair users.

Lord Nelson and Tenacious are the only ships of their type in the world which have special facilities aboard to allow the mixed ability crew to play a full and active role in every aspect of running a ship from helming and setting sails to cleaning the ship, known as ‘happy hour’.

Alistair Meharg, Press Officer at the JST said, “We are really pleased to be opening our ship up to the people of Bristol this year. The JST is all about equality and integration, so young or old, able bodied or disabled, all are welcome to come along and explore our fascinating ship free of charge.”

For those interested in a voyage on a tall ship, the JST provides year round sailing adventures for all. These amazing opportunities give everyone the chance to sail regardless of physical ability or sailing experience.
