Day 44. 1 December 2012

As the song goes, 'Don’t think twice, it’s another day for you and me in paradise’…..well, you can’t really beat sailing a tall ship in glorious sunshine across a sapphire-blue sea at a speed of 6 knots and with a temperature of some 26 degrees. This morning we had the excitement of setting the spanker (the big sail on the mizzen mast) for the first time on this trip so, with ten sails set we must be quite a magnificent sight for those few ships we chance to see on the horizon.

Yesterday, St Andrew’s Day, was celebrated at smoko by the unmistakable drone of bagpipes as Dave the Cook emerged from the galley with a magnificent cake decorate with the Saltier, in honor of our Scottish crew. Neil marked the occasion by wearing his kilt, which he had also sported on arrival in Recife, somewhat to the amazement or amusement of the local stevedores.

As already reported, today marked the end of the Movember moustache-growing competition, with a hilarious judging of the competitors by the Captain and Bosun, both blindfolded to guarantee fairness. However, and as is perhaps to be expected when one’s self-esteem is at stake, there have been some rumblings of discontent from those who spent November so carefully pruning their moustachioes, only to be pipped to the glory of joint first place by two bearded sailors! David and Henry are preparing a talk on prostate cancer to tie in with this event, with particular reference to how the disease affects couples.

The next inter-watch challenge, The Great Egg Drop, is to be celebrated next Monday so we are all busy trying to work out how to propel a raw egg from the foremast platform to land on deck without it breaking! No doubt there will be more news on this in later editions, so Watch This Space!

Now, to round off, it’s time for a little Polish from Agata: czesc Rodzinko, u nas po staremu, slonko swieci, wszystkie zagle prawie postawione, marzenie po prostu.Tomus, popros Kasie zeby miala na oku moje stypendium!;) caluje mocno I tak troszke to juz tesknie…buzka!

That’s all for now from Forward Port watch: Kate, Agata, Ali, David, Nev, Nick and Tom. (Bruno left us at Recife but is due to rejoin us before our arrival into Rio.)
