Back to the ship update blog

Leaving behind (astern) the small fishing town of Reposto, great views of
Etna under snow. Went past our destination of Syracuse so we could use wind
for some sailing into port. Sunday afternoon so lots of locals out to see
us, a friendly welcome. Ancient, strategic city with ruins of Temple of
Apollo free to visit in town centre plus Duomo cathedral. Overnight mooring
so some took"shore leave" for local delicacies (fish restaurants,
Limoncello..mmmm!) while those dining on ship had Sunday roast
beef/Yorkshires. So no one starved.
Monday afternoon sailed out of port - once again in sunbathing weather for
those not hauling sails or on watch duties.
We had good explanations of our course to and from Syracuse by Capt John.
And talk out on deck by First Mate Ali about square rig sailing, the
technical stuff, but only for those who wanted it or needed it! Night
warches at sea hoping for clear skies, Orion and Sirius spectacularly
bright away from land lights. We are Malta-bound again.....
