07/11/2010 - Tenacious

Dated: 10/11/2010

Aft Port watch took over at midnight until 4am as we continued our Westerward progress down the Westerly approaches to the English Channel. The bright light from Eddistone Rock lighthouse was the dominant feature in the dark hours. When dawn came Falmouth was close by and the sun illuminated a glorious vista of the River Fal estuary with Falmouth town and St.Mawes clearly visible. We took the designated approach route to an anchorage point in the nearby Helford Creek river estuary passing close to one of the fifteen or so vessels anchored just South of Falmouth. The anchorage point provided a sheltered respite from the Westerly winds. From here we were able to see Pendennis Castle and Gyllingvase beach which lies to the West side of the Falmouth Peninsula.

Beyond there lay the entrance to the River Fal leading up to Truro and the harbour of Falmouth itself which boasts the National Maritime Museum. The sun did not disappoint and whilst anchored here we enjoyed time to relax and read out on deck.In the afternoon we noticed the barograph start to fall quite sharply and this was accompanied by the sun disappearing early as a "Wet Sun" yellow or white before vanishing in a bank of cloud to the West.We were then treated to a hands on demonstration of Knotmanship by Gemma one of the permanent crew members. But now its time for dinner!!
