Back to the ship update blog

13/02/13 - Tenacious

Dated: 13/02/2013

After the mini squall that welcomed us to Risposte the previous evening it
was a welcome change to be greeted by warm sunshine this morning. Mt Etna
towered over the town covered in a dusting of snow. This was to be our
destination for the days excursion on dry land.
Within the space of an hour we had ascended the 2000 metres to the base of
the cable car station at Mount Etna. We were all glad that we had packed
lots of layers as that dusting of snow we had viewed from the ship turned
out to be 5 foot high drifts of snow! Unfortunately due to high winds the
cable car to the top station was not running. Some brave souls ventured out
by foot in an attempt to reach the upper station. The remainder of the group
explored some of the craters and the view of the coast to be seen around the
lower station. Determined to make the most of the snow a mini sledge was
purchased and some people enjoyed their first ever sledging experience on
the slopes of Mt Etna. The intrepid climbers returned a little colder but
none the worse for their mountain experience.
With the bus loaded up once more the descent of the mountain gave the group
another opportunity to see the Sicilian coastline spread out beneath them as
they left the snow covered slopes of Mount Etna behind one last time.
All too soon we were back at the ship and it was time to prepare for our
last night ashore in Sicily.
