13/10/11 - Lord Nelson

Dated: 17/10/2011

We motored towards France, triumphant following our lead in the first leg of the race, and relieved that a calmer sea would allow us to enjoy a good night’s sleep. The crew awoke to see the lights of a waking Cherbourg. Timing was crucial as we had to pass through the lock at 0818, disrupting the commuters on their way to work. We docked seamlessly and after a hearty breakfast had Happy Hour to get Lord Nelson shipshape before we all enjoyed some time ashore.
Tenacious had anchored in the outer harbour overnight and moored astern of us. We jokingly put out fenders in case she misjudged the distance and collided with us. No need. What a fine sight to see the two tall ships alongside each other. Marco lined us up for watch and voyage photos with a Tenacious shirt sneaking in, but discovered too late, on our captain. We also managed to gain an extra crew member as a local lady decided to join us for the voyage photo. A great example of how welcoming JST are! After lunch on board we all set out to enjoy some retail therapy. Everyone ate dinner ashore and a great time was had by all. Superb restaurant choice, thanks Colin. Feeling refreshed we are ready to take on Tenacious again to race the return leg of our journey back to Southampton.
