Mast Climb Fever to Hit Portland

Jubilee Sailing Trust (JST) and Poole Sailability are planning to put on a show for members of the public on Sunday 9th May 2010 at Portland Docks[summary] when members of Poole Sailability join other thrill seekers to take on the challenge of climbing the 100ft mast of Jubilee Sailing Trust’s tall ship, Lord Nelson.

But that’s not all. Jubilee Sailing Trust is looking for more daredevils who fancy feeling the wind in their hair as they clamber up rope and wood ladders to reach the very top of the mast (known on board as the button)

All climbers are asked to raise a minimum of £150 in sponsorship for the big day. Funds raised by each climber from Poole Sailability will be split equally between the two organisations, while all other climbers will be raising money for Jubilee Sailing Trust.

Lord Nelson, and Jubilee Sailing Trust’s other ship, Tenacious, are the only tall ships of their kind in the world that have been designed and built to enable crews of all physical ability to sail side by side as equals.

Alex Lochrane, Chief Executive of JST said, "I'm really looking forward to this year's event, our mast climb is such a thrilling way to raise money for a great local charity. Standing 125ft tall, the main mast is certainly a challenge for those climbing, but also a really fun day out for those cheering their family and friends all the way to the top!"

For more information please contact the fundraising team on 02380 426868 or email fundraising@jst.org.uk

Cut off date for applications is 1st May 2010

Next Communications Make a Generous Donation

Last Friday Jubilee Sailing Trust (JST) welcomed Next Communications on board tall ship Lord Nelson, where they presented Andy Spark, [summary]Ship Operations Manager of JST, with a cheque for over £1000 which has been used to offset the cost of mobile communications within the charity.

The two Southampton based organisations recently joined forces when JST appointed Next to handle all of its mobile communication needs. The charity depends on having reliable communication channels to enable efficient contact between the charity and its two tall ships, Lord Nelson and Tenacious.

Mark Finlayson, Managing Director of Next, said: “JST is a unique organisation. It operates the only two tall ships in the world that have been designed and built to enable people of all physical abilities to sail side-by-side as equals. The work that it does is life changing and life enhancing; no-one could fail to be impressed by its professionalism and dedication in overcoming prejudice and misconceptions about disability. All of us at Next Communications are very proud to be associated with such an outstanding organisation.”

Andy Spark describes: "We would like to offer our sincere thanks to Mark and his team at Next Communications for their very generous support. With an annual fundraising target of over £1.4 million, donations like this are vital to our ongoing operational activities."

Figurehead Sculptor Makes a Generous Donation

This year’s London Boat Show will showcase a very special talent when Glyn Foulkes, a Hamble based painter and sculptor, takes his place on the Classic Boat stand.[summary]

This year, Glyn, who is a recognised figure head sculptor will be continuing major work on a brand new figure head of Lord Nelson, which he will donate to Southampton based charity, Jubilee Sailing Trust (JST), upon its completion.

The Trust owns and operates two very special tall ships, both of which are the only of their kind in the world. The ships are adapted to enable able bodied and disabled people with all ranges of sailing experience to take on the responsibility of crewing the ships’ in destinations around the world.

Glyn became involved with Jubilee Sailing Trust over thirty years ago, when he donated pieces of his work to JST for fundraising purposes. The piece that he will be working on though has a very special purpose – as this figurehead is designed with Jubilee Sailing Trust’s first tall ship, Lord Nelson, in mind.

“Although the figurehead cannot be used on board Lord Nelson due to the special design of the bow sprit [to enable wheelchair users and all other crew members to have the Kate Winslet and Leonardo Dicaprio ‘Titanic’ experience] it is fitting that such a monumental piece of art is created for a ship that is so significant.” Says Glyn when asked why he’d chosen to produce the piece for Jubilee Sailing Trust.

Sarah Staines, Fundraising and Marketing Manager at Jubilee Sailing Trust explains, “As a small to medium charity that receives no Government funding we depend on the generosity of supporters like Glyn who truly believe in the mission that we aim to achieve. We will be able to use the figurehead at exhibitions like the London Boat Show as a representation of how grand our ships are and we’re enormously grateful to Glyn for his contribution.”
