Skydiving Headteacher helps the JST

For many, the idea of hurling themselves out of a plane at 13000 feet sounds like a nightmare,[summary] but one Headteacher from Coventry is about to take on the thrill seekers as he joins members of the famous Red Devils for 45 seconds of freefall at a terrifying 120mph.

Roger Whittall, 55, who is the Headteacher of The Westwood School, Coventry will be skydiving in tandem with a member of the Red Devils parachute team on Sunday 9th June at Langer Skydiving Centre. The opportunity was donated to him by Steve McDonagh, Chief Executive of Trinity Expert Systems who has been a supporter of the School that Roger teaches at for a number of years.

Steve won the experience at an auction in aid of Southampton based sailing Charity, the Jubilee Sailing Trust – which offers tall ship sailing adventures to able-bodied and disabled people and donated the prize to Roger because of their shared love of extreme sports. Roger and Steve met through The Westwood School, where Steve now acts as the Chair of Trustees since the school became a Trust School around a year ago.

Roger is no stranger to the world of adventure as a trained Sailing Instructor and a keen Mountaineer. He is also set to do a week of snow and Ice trekking and has a coast to coast sailing adventure with his wife coming up. He already has an empathy with the cause of the Jubilee Sailing Trust due to the fact that his school caters for children of mixed abilities.

Roger is also collecting sponsorship for his skydive, “I’m raising the sponsorship because I think Jubilee Sailing Trust is an important cause. We have a unit in the [Westwood] School for children with visual impairments and we have a number of wheelchair users. As a dingy coach I can see the benefits of outdoor pursuits for people with disabilities. I hope that in raising money for this skydive I can raise enough money to send at least on of the kids from my school on a sailing adventure with the charity.” In doing so the charity can continue to make it’s adventures accessible to everyone.

Jubilee Sailing Trust is a Southampton based charity that owns and operates the only two tall ships in the world designed and built to enable people of all physical abilities to sail alongside one another as crew members.

Jubilee Sailing Trust takes crews from the age of 16 and up and age means nothing onboard. Over 2000 people started sailing with the charity after the age of 65, while the oldest person ever to have sailed was 98.

No experience is necessary; all that’s required is a willingness to become part of the action as each person on board is expected to take up the helm, keep watch and muck in with the upkeep of the ship.

If anyone wishes to sponsor Roger for his skydive they can do so on his Virgin Money Giving page www.virginmoneygiving.com/rogerwhittle

She says the following of her forthcoming adventure;

“I am looking forward to being able to support others to enable them to enjoy the adventure of the Tall Ships Race. I also know that I will learn a lot about myself as well as having the opportunity to mix with lots of other Nationalities.
Wedding Day To Start With An Adventure – Aboard Unique Tall Ship

- Press Release - In a first for the Jubilee Sailing Trust (JST), Laura Bolton and Rob Johnston are spending the morning of their wedding day aboard Lord Nelson, one of two very special tall ships owned and operated by Southampton based charity, Jubilee Sailing Trust. [summary]

The couple, who are heavily involved with the charity, will be joined at Portsmouth’s Gunwharf Quays by 40 family and friends for a very special morning of sailing. The wedding party ‘crew’ will join the ship at 8.30am before setting sail around 9.15am on Sunday 16th May. They will return at around 2.30pm so that the bride can head off and get ready before the ceremony itself takes place in the Spinnaker Tower at 5pm.

Rob says the following about their decision to spend the start of their day on board Lord Nelson:

“We met in Marchwood on maintenance April ’07. I was doing something or other and Laura was on watchleaders course.

“Laura had sailed before I did with her brother, I found the JST because my local pub’s named the Lord Nelson and has got an old, old poster of Nellie on the wall.

“Interestingly, we have never actually sailed together even though we have both been on voyages since we met none of them have coincided, ( We have done quite a bit of maintenance together in the last 3 years) so this will be the first time.

“We both have a great deal of time for the JST, the permanent crew and everyone involved. It’s made an enormous difference to my life, not just meeting Laura but before that. Meeting the people helped make my mind up to change direction of my life and I’ve found encouragement from them both onboard and onshore.

“Seeing as the Lord Nelson played such a big part in bringing us together and we spend many a cold day and night onboard for maintenance we felt it was fitting to include the sailing. Originally we wanted to get married onboard but the logistics weren’t going to go our way so we did the next best thing. Andy helped us enormously getting things arranged and we’re happy we have the best possible day booked.”

The ship is one of only two tall ships in the world that had been designed and built to enable able bodied and disabled people to sail as equals, the other being Jubilee Sailing Trust’s second ship Tenacious. The charity achieves complete integration through the challenge of being a member of a tall ship crew, no experience necessary.

Rob,34, has sailed 8 times, he is trained as a JST Watchleader, which enables him to lead crew members during their voyage, ensuring that everyone get’s to participate fully. He is also part of the ‘2-6 Heavers’; the London volunteer Branch of the Jubilee Sailing Trust.

Laura, who will shortly turn 25, has sailed as a Bosun’s mate and a Watchleader. They have both also volunteered for maintenance duties in 2009 -2010, which involves working onboard either of the Jubilee Sailing Trust’s ships to carry out routine cleaning and upkeep.
